You may have noticed that projects and improvements slowed down in March and April. After working on the bathroom refresh, we took a little break… but we’re back! This year my goal is to be more transparent with the projects I hope to tackle, to hold myself accountable to my readers, and to invite all of you into the decision-making process. Before pushing ahead, I’m laying out the projects I hope to tackle this year (with only 8 months to go!).
Right now, majority of our rooms are in the 75-80% Project Completion Zone (PCZ). This means each room has been refreshed/updated but is not yet complete. Items remaining could be small and minor or larger (and costlier). Here is a list, in no order, of the open projects I want to complete in 2019. I’m counting on you to hold me accountable to this list!
Side note: I also encourage YOU to make a list of home goals. It doesn’t have to be a renovation or a complete room makeover. You can start by painting a dresser, adding new hardware to your cabinets, updating a light fixture, organizing your closet, filling empty picture frames, buying throw pillow, planting some flowers, adding a backsplash – small changes will make your home feel more like yours and don’t break the bank.
2019 Project List!
Master Bedroom
- Finish painting: window trim, baseboards, closet doors, interior of the closets, and ceiling.
- Install door hardware: both closet doors and the main door.
- Remove the ceiling fan and change the light
- Hang artwork
- New rug
- Add side chair/seating option
- Closet makeovers including new paint, wall-mounted shelving, coordination, etc.
- Ambitious goal: make a new headboard
Living Room
- Finish the fireplace surround: cut edge tiles, grout, paint touch-ups, baseboard molding on sides.
- Finish painting: all trim and wood work, quarter-round, ceiling
- Clean up the door casing between LR and hallway (remove old locks/hinges, cover holes)
- Add vent and return covers
- Add plate and outlet covers
- Pocket door project: separate the existing doors, trim out the opening, add molding to all sides, paint, and add hardware
2nd Floor Bathroom
- Add plate covers
- Finish painting the door
- Install door hardware!
- Fix the leaking sink
- Install the new shower head
- Install hooks behind the door
Penelope’s Room
- Finish painting the door
- Install door hardware!
- Install new ceiling light!
- Refresh her closet (paint, maybe a cute wallpaper?)
I’m only half-way through my list and I’m realizing how OD ambitious this is and am really questioning its feasibility. But, I need to be held accountable … stressed…
Entry Hallway / Stairs
- Paint stair treads and risers
- Paint stair railing and banister
- Paint hallway
- Install cover plates and outlet covers
- Install baseboards throughout
- New door hardware
Vestibule
- Add lighting option
- Remove old wallpaper
- Add board and batten or molding detail to make the space feel larger
- Paint!!
- Sand and refinish the front door
Dining Room
- Finish the pocket door build-out and trim (in coordination with living room)
- Finish painting: ceiling, trim, back walls, all wood trimming and baseboards
- Install new ceiling light
- Hang artwork
- Hang new curtains
- New rug!
- Work on the floors: we will likely not refinish the floors but we need to remove a weather section and blend into the existing hardwood. We need a transition between the kitchen and dining room since the kitchen floor is 2” raised.
- Make the dining room table!
Kitchen
- Fabricate and install the countertops
- Install the backsplash tile
- Trim the cabinets to the ceiling
- Install the cabinet hardware
- Finish painting: ceiling, trim, touch-ups
- Install new ceiling light
- Sand and refinish the door to the mudroom
- Install and paint the island cabinets (with a countertop from above)
- New rug!
- Cut, stain and seal floating shelves for the long wall
- Install the sink and faucet (duh!)
- Install the transition to the dining room and the mudroom (narrow thresholds)
WHOO! This list is daunting and may seem overwhelming but its just a bunch of small little things (okay, the kitchen is a big undertaking) that will make a difference in the quality of life in our home. I didn’t include the mudroom/pantry, the backyard, completing the first floor bathroom, the blue room (aka Jackson’s spare room), or the basement!
I’m counting on all of you to please hold me accountable to this list! What do you think? Is it doable? Am I crazy and over-committing myself.
