If you’re new here, be sure to first check where the living room started. It was hideous. Now that we have a blank slate, we made some really small, but impactful, changes.
First, we changed the light fixture. The ceiling fan served no purpose for us and wasn’t our style. We opted for a modern 6-light Sputnik chandelier from Amazon in a brass finish.
Next, we used the pop-out in the wall (which really served no purpose) as the backing for our faux fireplace.
The fireplace was a DIY loosely based on an adapted tutorial from the Home Depot – I’ll have our own tutorial up soon so you can DIY this same faux fireplace. It took us 1 full day and just involved pine boards from home depot.
The faux fireplace turned out better than we ever thought: the hexagon Carrara tile is so subtle and ties into the mudroom. We painted the fireplace black for a pop since its setting the standard for the entire first floor.
The bay window brings in a lot of natural light that highlights our high ceilings – just over 10′. We installed 7 1/4″ baseboards throughout but need to install quarter-rounds because there’s a gap.
What do you think? The black is definitely really bold and makes a statement – I’m obsessed with it and although I was hesitant at first, Mike made the decision and was right. We have a lot of finishing work to do, we need to finish cutting some checks and grouting, install quarter-rounds all along to close the gaps, and of course work on the pocket doors to the dining room.
Considering where we started I’m just overjoyed to not have wood paneling everywhere.
Let me know what you think!
