This is a super quick 1-2 hour DIY for an instant room upgrade using ordinary supplies.
Every time I walked into Penelope’s room, I felt it was missing something and lacked a bit of character. I decided to add a bit more charm and personality with an easy sponge accent wall. Typical sponge painted walls are very messy and heavily involved but I wanted to use only supplies on hand.
Supplies
- 4″ sponge. I used the edge of a cleaning pad and trimmed the edges a bit so that it wasn’t as square and uniform
- Paint! I mixed Behr Silver Lining with leftover Benjamin Moore Salamander (just a splash of Salamander) for this light mint color. If you don’t have paint on hand, you can use a purchase a paint sample from any big box for $4 and this should be more than enough.
- A ladder, obviously.
- Painter’s tape, if needed, to prevent drips on edges.
First, wipe down your wall. I’m embarrassed to say there was some dust on the wall #reallifeisnotperfect. Oops.
Next, start your pattern! Test it first in an inconspicuous area to determine how far apart you want the sponge marks. Mine are about 3-4″ apart.
Start in one corner and go across until about half way through your wall. You can work in smaller sections if you’d like and if it’s easier.
From start to finish this 9.5′ wall, approximately 9′ high, took me less than one hour!
I had a few drips, and a few irregular spots, but it was very forgiving and easy for my first sponge wall.
Where will you practice this?? Show me and be sure to follow my instagram (@tiarrahamlett) for project updates in real-time!
