Sooo… P’s room was feeling a little bland the last time I was in here. It’s cute and everything, but it needed some personality. So I decided to add wall art over her crib.
I needed wall art that:
1. Uses materials I already have in the house
2. Would be a quick project I could start/finish in under 20 minutes
3. Gender neutral – to be reused in the future for another baby
4. Not too “babyish” – something that could also fit in a toddler and little girl room. Nothing too cutesy cutesy.
I decided on handwritten ABCs and numbers – one on each canvas. I searched on Pinterest but could only find ABC wall art using blocks, printables, or really ornate ones. My solution – just DIY!
First, I did a dry trial run with a pen and large piece of paper to make sure I scaled my letters correctly. I had to do this twice because the first time I ran out of room for UVXYZ and they would have been really squished at the end of the canvas.
Once I figured out my spacing, I copied this onto the canvas – its OK if it’s not “perfect” since the handwritten effect with add some variation and hide any irregularities.
Then I just grabbed a standard cheap brush and used black paint we had laying around from painting the fireplace.
They’re not perfect but I love them! I also appreciate so much that it’s MY handwriting, not something generic.
I mounted them to the wall with command strips! All in all, 20 minutes!
No matter what, though, I still feel like P’s room is just “missing something.” It’s either too gray or too muted. Eventually her room will become my office so whatever changes I make I want them to be mature enough for an adult office space. I’m considering tall board and batten around the room painted in a very soft shade of green or blue and then wall paper above it. Or bold statement art? Or just wallpaper an entire wall??
Good luck with this simple DIY and share pics of how you style your nursery!
