Hey, friends! This post is going to be my very first series! I’ve been working on this project for a while and am beyond excited to finally share this with you. I hope you join me weekly and watch this renovation unfold.
Earlier this summer, my mom enlisted my help to design a unit remodel. At first I thought it was just picking some finishes and offering my opinion but she so graciously trusts me with THE. ENTIRE. DESIGN. Layout, materials, finishes, everything. I was SO blown away (hello, I’m not a designer. I just wish I were ;).
APARTMENT OVERVIEW:
– 3rd floor walk-up
– Formerly 3 separate bedrooms + a bathroom + kitchenette
– Conversion into a 2 bedroom (1 large, 1 small office) with open concept living and kitchen
– Approximately 600 square feet
– Apartment had not been touched (not so much as paint!) in the last 10 years and the walls had not been opened since the house was built… in… 1910. Insane.
You can see that the floor was definitely really lived in. Remember, this wasn’t one apartment but 3 rooms that were rented to separate people with a communal kitchen.
Because of the configuration, there was no actual living room or dining room – you had to basically eat and run back to your bedroom. I saw the potential to open up the living room into the larger bedroom for a living room/kitchen connection and to make use of the great natural light!
The unit felt so small and cramped but had serious potential because of its natural light and high ceilings.
Do you see the potential here? What do you think it’s going to look like? Next week I’m going to share my renovation ideas – blowing out walls, subway tile, industrial lighting 🙂
