We’re ending week 6 of the One Room Challenge, sponsored by media partner Apartment Therapy, and I’m FINALLY feeling confident in our work and in our progress! This has been such a rollercoaster experience as week after week we’ve run into hurdles and setbacks. Plus, real life + career + parenthood.
BUT ALAS! WE ARE IN THE FINAL STRETCH. Jk – still have (and need) 2 weeks!
Catch up on the kitchen progress thus far below and be sure to check out the other amazing spaces in this year’s challenge: https://www.oneroomchallenge.com/orc-blog
The biggest update so far is that we …. PRIMED!!! The kitchen finally has crown molding over the cabinets, completely trimmed out and built in side panels, a range hood cover, and all the bells and whistles (and lots of caulk and wood filler).
And now she is PRIMED! I know it may not look as exciting as it feels because there’s still no color, but this is a big step forward!
Here is the kitchen right before priming. We added crown molding to the cabinets, caulked and filled all the gaps between cabinets and the walls, and taped up the cabinets and appliances.
Prepping takes the longest but is worth it for the sprayer finish.
We are using Zinsser 123 Primer – which doesn’t require us to degloss and provides excellent coverage. We are also using this time to prime the rest of the kitchen.
Big Changes are coming this week:
- Monday: finish priming and start painting. The exterior door (a $100 fb marketplace steal!) is also being installed, which is immediately going to transform the entire space.
- Tuesday: finish painting and prep for countertop install. We are DIYing our install and will document it here! I’d also like to install artwork, curtains, and light fixtures. Tuesday night we are starting on the backsplash as well! Ambitious, I know, but we only have a week to go.
- Wednesday: backsplash, faucet and sink install, cabinet hardware install, switch plates, outlet covers, all of that will be installed. We’ll also be installed the custom dishwasher panel we made! I know, I forgot to mention this but it’s a nice little surprise. Most importantly, we need to start the flooring!!
- Thursday – Weekend: flooring, flooring and only flooring.
This is the mood for this week: door install, painted cabinets, soapstone countertop install, backsplash install, lights, and hardware!
I hope we can do it. Lots of sleepless nights in the near future.
