The One Room Challenge kitchen saga continues, and this week was another dub. I wish I had more to report on, to update, but there’s still nothing pretty to share. It has been a struggle to stay on task amidst work and family, so we are just trying our best right now.
In case you missed weeks 1, 2 and 3, catch up below. You can review my mood board and direction.
The One Room Challenge is a 7 week challenge to completely redo a space – indoor or outdoor. You can view other spaces and follow along as we head into the final month here: https://www.oneroomchallenge.com/orc-blog
This week we focused on redesigning the floor – we are nixing the square edges in exchange for the 1×1 hexagon tiles. We will have a full 1×1 hex floor, a mix of white, black, green, grey, and light brown. We are still finalizing the exact design but we want a large black border around the room.
We removed the existing engineered hardwood. Mike (my husband) used a multi tool to cut around the base of the cabinets because we will not be replacing the floors under the cabinets.
Please look pass the mess — it is hard for me to share pics like this on the internet for the world to see and judge. But this is real world, a real renovation in real time.
When we pulled up the first section in the nook, we found tremendous water damage. We had roof work at the start of the year so now we know that this area will remain 100% dry.
Ugh, that is gross. So much water damage – one section of the subfloor is damaged, but the remainder of the kitchen is salvageable, thankfully. It feels great to remove the flooring and make sure that there is no health risk for us and for our family.
WHAT’S LEFT TO DO:
- Remove the existing flooring
- Lay the cement board
- Waterproof the cement board
- Install the range hood
- Build a range hood cover with easy access for the switches
- Trim out the top of the cabinet
- Remove the existing countertop
- Use wood filler to close all gaps in cabinetry and trim
- Install recessed floating shelf brackets
- Sand cabinet fronts (for wood filler) and then degloss
- Clean all cabinet fronts and doors
- Finishing patching holes and gaps
- Prime
- Paint
- Get new countertops ready for install
- Install dishwasher panel front
- Tile backsplash
- Tile floor
- Install countertops
- New hardware, new vents, new plate covers,
- Plus a million other things
There’s a lot to get done, there’s a lot to finish. We feel a little overwhelmed and daunted, but hope we can still pull this off. Send us some positive vibes pleassseeee
