As I prep for the holiday season I want to take a look at our holiday prep last year, 2018. 2018 was our second year in the house but the first year we put up a tree and the first year we had a forever home. 2018 was also the first Thanksgiving and Christmas with Penelope and felt extra special.
The focal point in our living room is the faux fireplace we built last fall. The fireplace grounds the room and adds a traditional element. My step-by-step tutorial makes it easy for you to create this fireplace in a weekend!
We were so fortunate to receive personalized stockings for our mantle from Minted. These stockings will last us years to come and we can continue to add to them as our family grows. Mike’s stocking is Painterly Plaid, Penelope’s stocking is Winter Harvest and mine is Happy Forest.
The best part is that Minted offers free personalization on a custom leather tag. These will make amazing Christmas gifts and elevate ordinary stockings.
We opted for a fake tree last year and had no regrets! I do not like real trees because they require so much upkeep and constantly sweeping up needles. Our faux tree is a 7.5′ Balsam Hill gifted by my mom and we love it! It’s full, round, and looks so great in our living room.
One of my favorite Christmas pieces is the Mark & Graham Santa Sack. We ordered one for Penelope before she was born and have decided to use it to easily corral her gifts, especially helpful when we’re traveling from relative’s house to house.
Her sack is the Fair Isle Christmas Tree Design in red/green and is unfortunately no longer available. M&G added new colors and the red stripe is my new favorite and includes free monogramming.

How do you decorate for the holidays? Do you already have everything up or are you waiting until after Thanksgiving? Do you go all out or keep it minimalistic?
